Opening of the Cobega FACTORY in La Verneda

HISTORY

The initial success of Cobega was so significant that, within little more than a decade, the company outgrew its factory on Carrer dels Almogàvers in Barcelona, despite successive expansions.

Finally, Santiago Daurella de Rull acquired 28 000 m 2 of land in the La Verneda neighbourhood, where construction began on what was to be the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant in Europe and one of the five largest of 2000 in the world.

On 22 September 1965, Cobega inaugurated its new factory on Carrer de Guipúzcoa, with 23 113 m2 of facilities, an initial bottling capacity of 85 000 bottles per hour on four production lines, a warehouse for 10 million bottles and parking for 400 vehicles.

The inauguration ceremony, a social and media event, was presided over by Santiago Daurella and attended by Coca-Cola’s top management: John Talley and James Farley, president and former president of The Coca-Cola Export Corporation; Alexander Makinsky, Coca-Cola’s vice president of exports and public relations in Europe; Juan Manuel Sainz de Vicuña, president of Coca-Cola España; and representatives from the rest of the Spanish franchises and those of Belgium, France and Denmark.
